Township Prepares for Medicaid Cuts

The Macomb City Township board voted last week to buy medical assistance catastrophic insurance from the Allied Benefits System. Township Supervisor Angela Markley said her office would have to cover large health claims of general assistance clients if the federal government cuts back the Medicaid allotment. The township is taking a $15,000 deductible and will pay $4,314 annually for the medical claims insurance.

Markley reported that 17 general assistance interviews were conducted in April, with four applications approved and three denied. A total of 34 clients received assistance in April. and eight applications are stilll pending. Five men and five women were determined to be employable, 10 men and nine women have filed for disability, and four men and two women were declared medically exempt from employment. A total of $11,407 in general assistance funds were distributed in April, with $8,542 in funding spent on shelter costs.

The township supervisor said her office mailed or handed out 19 general assistance applications in April and that 20 interviews were scheduled in May. Markley also reported that the external audit of township funds for fiscal year 2024-2025 began on May 5. She said all township figures must be in the hands of auditors before June 13.
