Reviewer’s Name: Cindy Amundsen Reviewer’s Occupation: Salesperson Book Title: Inland Book’s Author: Tea Obreht Inland takes place in 1893 in the southwestern United States. Lurie is an orphan and a murderer. After a botched robbery attempt by his gang, he discovers he has the ability to see ghosts, but is also haunted by their desires and longings. To mend his ways, he joins the U.S. Army’s Camel Corp. Nora is a frontierswoman who lives with her family in drought-stricken Arizona. After her husband goes missing to find water and her two older boys go in search of him, she is left with her small son, her aged mother-in-law, an addled niece and the ghost of a daughter who died years earlier. Obreht uses magical realism and the theme of water (the search of and absence of) to explore the themes of loneliness and family.
