MACOMB FARMER’S MARKET
Out of the Storm
On June 29, 2023, a derecho blew through the Tri-States. It spanned the entire northern tier of Missouri, sweeping across Illinois and into central and southern Indiana.
Towns such as LaHarpe and Blandinsville were hit hard. Thousands of mature trees were snapped like twigs.
For one LaHarpe resident, the derecho left at least one good thing behind. Wood. A lot of wood.
Truman Kost of LaHarpe is a woodworker. For much of his life he has made things out of walnut, sycamore, cedar, pine, silver maple, red oak and cherry.
Truman, who is named after his great-grandfather, works out of his home and is a new vendor at the summer Macomb Farmer's Market.
The derecho allowed Truman to collect all kinds of wood to add to his inventory.
Wanting to give his little woodworking business a name, Truman's mother suggested he connect it somehow to the June 29, 2023 derecho. She came up with the name 'Out of the Storm', Truman liked it and the rest is local history.
Woodworking is Truman's hobby and second job, as he works another job full time in Macomb.
Just some of the items Truman makes are clipboards of all standard paper sizes, crates, rolling pins of all sizes, cutting boards, mallets, house number signs, religious crosses, bowls of all sizes, and recipe card stands. He also makes Candy Cane Countdown boards for the Christmas season. Kost does custom orders and can also add wood burning if wanted. For a custom order, he would like a month's advance notice for the Christmas season and two weeks notice for other times of the year.
Truman Kost enjoys Macomb Farmer's Market as he enjoys getting out and meeting new people. He hopes to attend most Saturday markets in Macomb and possibly the LaHarpe Country Christmas event before Christmas.
He has entertained the notion of expanding his business in some fashion, but not right at the moment.
When shopping at the Macomb Farmer's Market, be sure to look for the booth that says 'Out of the Storm'.
Truman Kost's items are masterpieces. Especially when one realizes that some of his items were handcrafted out of the discarded wood from the derecho of 2023.
For this young entrepreneur the saying runs true that 'Every cloud has a silver lining.'
