Area Physician Killed in Traffic Accident

MACOMB, IL – An area doctor with Macomb connections was killed in a traffic accident Thursday afternoon in Monmouth. Dr. Syed Imam, 44, of Peoria, died as a result of a crash involving a semi near the Love's Truck Stop in Monmouth.

Imam, who was a nephrologist with OSF Healthcare, was pronounced dead at the scene around 2:50 p.m. Thursday, May 15, about 20 minutes after the accident occurred. Imam's vehicle collided with a semi-truck. In recent months, the speed limit had been reduced near the high traffic intersection in an attempt to lessen the number of accidents near the busy truck stop on the southeast side of Monmouth on Rt. 67 at 185th Avenue. The road was closed for nearly six hours Thursday evening.

According to Warren County Coroner Al McGuire, an autopsy has been conducted, but a cause of death will not be released until toxicology testing is complete.

'We are deeply saddened to confirm that Dr. Syed Imam, a valued member of the medical staff at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg and OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, has died following an accident. Dr. Imam was a dedicated physician with Renal Care Associates who provided exceptional care to his patients and was beloved by his colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children, as well as the many coworkers and patients who were impacted by his life and service,” OSF wrote in the statement.

Imam practiced internal medicine and nephrology in Galesburg, Macomb, Monmouth and Peoria. He graduated in 2012 from the National University of Sciences & Technology Pakistan, and was board certified in internal medicine.
